Throughout its history, Malta endured frequent external attacks, notably culminating in the Great Siege of Malta occurred in 1565 when the Ottoman Empire attempt to occupy the island. As the island&#8217;s governors since the 11th century, the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Malta, persistently resisted the Turks. However, under the courageous leadership of Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette, and the aid of the Spanish troops, the Ottoman army was ultimately defeated in 1566.
At that point, the primary need was to protect the island, which led Jean de la Vallette to build a fortified village layout resembling a chessboard, to further protects villagers and give them easy access to the walls in case of an enemy attack. The village was named after Valletta himself and later became the island&#8217;s capital city. Today, the city is still protected by walls that stretch for almost four kilometres and which, together with other later fortified structures, make it look like a true fortress. Inside the walls, sober ochre stone buildings with colourful shutters and balconies overlook a network of perpendicular streets.
Due to the great profusion of historical and cultural sites in such a small island, Valletta was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The city predominantly showcases Baroque architecture. A notable example is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, adorned with lavish decorations and renowned paintings by artists, such as Caravaggio. The Museum of Archaeology is also housed in a splendid Baroque building, built in 1571 by the will of the Knights of Malta, which contains a rich collection of artefacts dating from Prehistory to the Roman times.
Next to the historical buildings, the Barrakka public gardens, divided into lower and upper gardens, are certainly an oasis of peace amidst manicured greenery, statues and monuments. In the upper gardens, a spacious arched terrace offers a wonderful view of the Grand Harbour, one of the island&#8217;s two natural inlets.
To illuminate the beautiful capital of the Maltese archipelago, the municipality is retrofitting old light sources with LED-only lights.
