Wrapped in an atmosphere of tranquillity and gentle unhurriedness, Trebinje is a charming town located near the borders of Croatia and Montenegro, in the region of Eastern Herzegovina. Its beauty can be found in every corner. The historic centre, where ancient grey-stone walls and houses create a network of narrow streets dating back to the Ottoman era, overlooks the clear waters of the Trebišnjica, one of the longest underground rivers in the world. Mosques of Ottoman heritage, Orthodox churches and monasteries lend this part of the town an atmosphere of mysticism and serenity, while also reflecting the historical events and cultural diversity that have long shaped Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Beside the river lies the Platani Square, named after the magnificent centuries-old plane trees that shade this lively meeting place. Here, the town’s long-standing farmers’ market tradition comes to life, with local producers showcasing a wealth of authentic specialities, such as honey and wine. These delicacies are made possible by Trebinje’s particularly mild climate; it is no coincidence that the town is also known as the City of the Sun.
The two banks of the Trebišnjica river are dotted with historic stone bridges, a material that more than any other defines the town’s identity. Among them, the Arslanagić Bridge undoubtedly stands out. Dating back to 1574, it is a true masterpiece of Ottoman engineering and was added to the list of national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006. The bridge features two large main arches, complemented by smaller superimposed ones. In the 1960s, following the construction of a dam along the river, the bridge was completely dismantled and rebuilt stone by stone between 1970 and 1972, slightly away from the centre of Trebinje, where it remains today.
In a town characterised by such a high quality of life, excellent healthcare facilities are essential, including highly specialised centres such as the refurbished General Hospital. This is the main hospital serving the entire population of southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Alongside a 24-hour accident and emergency department, the hospital includes numerous wards, such as orthopaedics, internal medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics, neurology and psychiatry. Qualified medical staff provide specialist care and perform both routine and highly complex surgical procedures, supported by a radiology department, as well as specialised diagnostic laboratories and a multi-purpose intensive care unit for critically ill patients.
In recent years, the healthcare system in Bosnia and Herzegovina has benefited from significant investment aimed at improving both medical care and hospital facilities. This modernisation programme also included the refurbishment of the outdoor car parks at Trebinje Hospital, with the installation of an innovative lighting system. The project was commissioned to Disano, which selected street lighting fixtures from its Braies range.
The lighting system delivered uniform, consistent illumination, eliminating shadows and significantly improving overall visibility. Glare is effectively managed thanks to advanced optics that offer excellent visual safety while preserving the surrounding environment.
Moreover, the installed luminaires ensure high energy efficiency while minimising light waste. The flexibility provided by technologies that allow adjustment of colour temperature (CCT SWITCH) and power output (POWER SWITCH) makes it possible to adapt the lighting to different times of day and seasons. These measures are essential for creating a safe, functional and welcoming environment for healthcare staff, patients and visitors, and for significantly reducing energy costs and maintenance expenses.
The Braies design, which reinterprets the classic streetlamp shape with a geometric touch, adds elegance to any installation site while blending harmoniously with its surroundings.
Disano’s lighting project for the Trebinje Hospital car park has undoubtedly improved safety for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, thanks to efficient and environmentally sustainable lighting. At the same time, the sleek and functional design of the Braies luminaires has brought a modern, welcoming touch to the entire area.
