Crossed by the Váh River, Trenčín is a picturesque town in Slovakia located near the border with the Czech Republic. Thanks to its wealth of historical, cultural, and artistic places of interest, it has been chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2026.
Its iconic castle dominates the enchanting landscape, standing unchallenged and majestic. The castle&#8217;s original core was built in the 11th century to safeguard the trade that flourished in the surrounding area. Its origins, however, appear even older, as evidenced by a Latin inscription dating to 179 AD. In it, Marcus Valerius Maximianus, commander of the Legio II Adiutrix Pia Fidelis (Second Roman Legion, supporter, loyal and faithful), thanks Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus for their victory over the Quadi, a Germanic people, suggesting the presence of the Roman Empire in Central Europe. Among the town&#8217;s places of worship, the Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary holds a special place. Built in 1324 in the Gothic style, it endured numerous adversities, including repeated sieges and fires. The current structure is a reconstruction from the early 20th century, following a fire in 1886 that completely destroyed the original building. Also dating back to medieval times is the Lower Gate, built in the early 15th century to protect the southern part of the city. This is the only one of the two gates to have survived the attacks and sieges of the following centuries. Restoration work carried out in 1592 replaced its original Gothic character with Renaissance style. The Holy Trinity column, on the other hand, features a Baroque style and was erected in 1712 to commemorate the victims of the plague that struck the town in 1710.
These places, which embody the town&#8217;s history and artistic heritage, deserve to be showcased at their best – something only possible with the right lighting. This is why the municipality of Trenčín chose to continue replacing outdated light sources with LED lighting, making sure that every public space becomes comfortable, safe and accessible, especially after dark.
Moreover, as modern urban centres continue to expand with diverse routes – from vehicle roads and cycle lanes to restricted traffic zones and pedestrian areas – every urban lighting project must address these different needs while also protecting both the environment and its residents. It is therefore essential to use LED technology fixtures, which can illuminate every space with higher quality and greater output, all without increasing energy and maintenance costs.
The compact nature of LED sources contributes to creating luminaires that boast sophisticated designs, characterised by lines and shapes that blend beautifully into different urban settings.

In Trenčín, public spaces lit by Aura have been transformed: its lighting improves visibility for residents and visitors, instils a sense of safety during the darkest hours, and protects both eyesight and the surrounding urban and natural environment.
