Laredo is one of the most popular holiday spots in Cantabria, an Autonomous Community along the coast of northern Spain. This charming town mixes stunning natural scenery, like the long, velvety sands of La Salvé beach, with the enchantment of its rich history and heritage.
The heart of Laredo, known as Puebla Vieja, was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1970. Dating back to the Middle Ages, it still preserves parts of the old city walls, and its narrow streets are lined with elegant houses from the 16th to 18th centuries. In the historical centre, perched on higher area, is the austere Church of Santa María de la Asunción, which was made part of the National Artistic Treasure in 1931. Built in Gothic style, its interior holds valuable artefacts, including wood carvings from a 15th-century Flemish polyptych set in a grand Baroque altarpiece, an 18th-century tubular organ, and the triptych of the Desamparados, which features the Piedad at the centre, with portraits of donors Bernardino de Escalante and his nephew García on the side panels.
Adding to the charm of this medieval town is the market building, constructed in the early 20th century with a modernist touch, as seen in its glazed ceramic decorations. Another highlight is the Watchtower Tunnel, built in 1855 to connect the town to the port that later served as a shelter from air raids during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939.
To enhance Laredo’s many charming spots, the public lighting system was entrusted to Disano. The Autonomous Community of Cantabria chose the Italian company to design the system using cutting-edge LED fixtures. This decision was made to significantly reduce energy and maintenance costs, while improving visibility for residents and respecting the natural environment.
In detail, two types of fixtures, Rolle and Susa, were installed to enhance street visibility. Thanks to their latest generation lighting technology, they provide excellent visibility, allowing both residents and tourists to move through the streets safely and comfortably. Squares and green spaces like parks and gardens, on the other hand, are illuminated by Garda and Ischia, modern LED fixtures that combine innovative technical features to ensure the right colour temperature. These lights not only protect human vision but also safeguard the local wildlife. Moreover, their wattages are optimised for energy efficiency, resulting in significant savings.
The municipality of Laredo now enjoys the many benefits of Disano‘s lighting solution. Whether it’s a square, street or tree-lined area, lights make every corner of the city shine, all while prioritising top-level safety and visual comfort.
