Located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily and just a few miles from Agrigento, Porto Empedocle boasts one of the busiest ports in the region. It serves as a vital hub for both the transportation of goods and the passage of passengers to and from Lampedusa and Linosa. The life of Porto Empedocle has always been intricately intertwined with its port. Dating back to the 15th century, when it was a mere fishing village known as Marina di Girgenti, the establishment of the so-called caricatore marked a significant milestone. This large warehouse served as a storage facility for grain, much of which was subsequently loaded onto ships and sold abroad, contributing to the prosperity of Agrigento&#8217;s economy. In 1554, the Tower of Charles V was erected in response to frequent attacks by pirates and Turks. However, it wasn&#8217;t until the 19th century that Marina di Girgenti started to flourish as a settlement. The port&#8217;s increasing significance, particularly in the sulphur trade, attracted numerous merchants who relocated there and constructed residences, churches, warehouses, and other structures, boosting the area&#8217;s development. The growing town gradually attained full independence from Agrigento in 1853. A decade later, it adopted its current name, Porto Empedocle, as a homage to the philosopher from Agrigento who lived in the 5th century BC.
To this day, the economy of this enchanting Sicilian town remains largely reliant on its port. In a bid to enhance accessibility and boost its appeal, the municipality recently undertook the construction of a new terminal, equipped with a car park, pedestrian and bicycle paths, and green spaces.
During the design phase, a meticulous process of finding and analysing standards, constraints, and requirements was conducted. This phase was characterised by close collaboration between the port officials and the appointed architectural firm, with the aim of developing a project that was not only technologically advanced but also integrated, considering the diverse demands ranging from structural and architectural aspects to design requirements.
The lighting design was entrusted to Disano, which opted for the Faro model, chosen for its simple, sharp, and modern design that facilitates its perfect integration into the installation site.
From a technical point of view, the Faro bollards are fitted with the most advanced LED sources, the only ones capable of delivering high quality, well-directed light, while also being able to add elegance to the surrounding scenery. A clear reduction in energy and maintenance costs is also an added value.
In the renovated Sicilian port, modernisation was further enhanced by the Disano&#8216;s lighting equipment. The Faro luminaires, developed with a focus on maximum innovation and efficiency, not only provide proper illumination but also add a touch of charm to the envirornment.
