A charming geological jewel, shaped by natural forces, such as strong winds and vigorous ocean waves: this is how Mutriku might appear at first glance. Nestled in a picturesque and colourful bay, Mutriku is a tiny town in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, not far from the better-known Bilbao and facing the Atlantic Ocean, a constant presence reminding us of its past as a fishing village.

However, Mutriku also offers architectural and artistic highlights of great beauty. It is one of the most important medieval towns of the Basque Country, as evidenced by the central core founded in the early 13th century, where visitors can find towers and noble palaces along its cobbled streets. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with its portico in the shape of a Greek temple and its circular interior and rectangular exterior plan, displays a neoclassical style.

But the Basque town also looks to the future, showing itself to be very attentive to the liveability of its inhabitants. In 2011, to reduce polluting emissions, Europe’s first commercial wave energy plant was installed here. A choice that goes towards environmental sustainability, focusing on alternative resources and technological innovation.

It’s the same direction taken by the municipality of Mutriku to light up the urban space with new lights, highlighting historical sites as well as its scenic beauty, while ensuring the safety of its residents and the surrounding nature.
