Martin Margiela, the Belgian avant-garde fashion designer, is best known for his iconic white tags, later replaced by a numeric label, attached to the inside of the garments with four simple stitches. Margiela&#8217;s &#8216;blanks&#8217; allow the creations to stand out, without any mention to the designer, capturing the essence of his distinctive approach to fashion. For Margiela, creating meant deconstructing, challenging sartorial norms, cutting and removing pieces from old clothes to give them new life, showing off linings and inner parts, using unusual materials such as corks to ceramic shards to create surprising garments, jewellery or accessories. His pieces reflected the spirit of freedom from the 1970s, prioritising resourcefulness over opulence during a period of recovery and reinvention. His fashion shows featured non-professional models, often recruited from his circle of friends.
Maison Margiela was founded in Paris in 1988 and creates haute couture as well as ready-to-wear collections while its product lines include not only women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s clothing, footwear and accessories but also perfumes, jewellery and homeware.
An Italian MM6 Maison Margela store was opened in the Portanuova district in Milan, where clothing and accessory lines for the contemporary, unconventional woman are on display, all made from the highest quality fabrics and materials.
