Leskovac is located in southern Serbia and serves as the administrative centre of the Jablanica district. It is a small town gently sheltered by the green slopes of Hisar Hill, which rises to 341 metres above sea level. Alongside its fragrant woodland and pine forests, the hill is home to important historical remains, such as the Hisar archaeological site, which contains the ruins of a fortified settlement dating back to the Bronze Age (2300–900 BC). The town was first inhabited by the Dardanians, a Balkan people, and later by the Byzantines, before the arrival of the Ottomans in the mid-15th century.
To discover more about its history, the National Museum houses a permanent exhibition entitled &#8220;Time Machine of the Leskovac Region&#8221;. Through an interactive display, the exhibition traces the history of the region across the centuries, from prehistory to the present day, drawing on a collection of more than 30,000 artefacts. Particular attention is dedicated to the Serbian knight Nikola Skobaljić, remembered for his courage in defending his people against the Ottoman invasion during the battles of 1454. The exhibition includes a life-size reconstruction of the knight wearing his armour.
Leskovac’s folklore traditions are celebrated during the famous Roštiljijada, the barbecue festival held between late August and early September. During this period, the streets and squares of the town centre come alive with the flavours and aromas of local cuisine, accompanied by live music and exciting culinary competitions.
Among the many urban services available to citizens, the refurbished General Hospital plays a particularly important role. Ranked among the largest hospitals in Serbia, with a capacity of around 800 beds, it offers essential medical care not only for the city of Leskovac but also for the entire Jablanica district. In recent years, the hospital has undergone major modernisation works and a reorganisation of its internal departments. Improvements included the introduction of new diagnostic imaging services, such as endoscopy and ultrasound, as well as the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment and technologies to deliver increasingly accurate assessments and effective treatments. Highly qualified healthcare staff provide care across a wide range of specialist areas, such as neurology, oncology, internal medicine and infectious diseases. The hospital also has a 24-hour accident and emergency department and an intensive care unit.
Further value is added by the General Hospital’s role as a teaching centre for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Niš, a city located just over 50 kilometres from Leskovac. Specialists, professors and consultants ensure important support, particularly in complex fields such as cardiology and neurology, managing serious cases through advanced treatments and surgical procedures, while also helping to address local staffing needs.
Recently, as part of its ongoing modernisation programme, the General Hospital underwent further refurbishment, including an upgrade of its lighting system, which was entrusted to Disano. The Italian company, a global manufacturer of lighting solutions for the healthcare sector, develops specialised, high-performance products backed by the expertise it has gained since its foundation in 1957. For a project of this scale, it was essential that key elements such as lighting met the highest quality standards, ensuring maximum visual safety and creating comfortable environments for both healthcare staff and patients.
With a focus on technological innovation and environmental sustainability, the project involved the installation of the lighting fixtures from the LED Panel, Ermetica and Rodi product ranges.
The luminaires were carefully selected according to strict technical requirements, including high colour rendering, low glare and adjustable light output. This makes luminaires such as Rodi and LED Panel ideal for communal areas, including waiting rooms and corridors, where they help create a welcoming atmosphere while ensuring excellent visual comfort.
The Ermetica range, on the other hand, was designed for operating theatres and treatment rooms, where lighting quality is essential for carrying out particularly delicate procedures and tasks to the highest standards. These luminaires are specifically developed to meet the strict hygiene requirements of aseptic environments, where maintaining complete sterility is the top priority.
The lighting project developed by Disano has therefore made a significant contribution to the refurbishment of Leskovac General Hospital, ensuring visual safety and well-being for both patients and healthcare staff using some of the most advanced solutions currently available on the market.
