Gyula is a charming Hungarian town located near the Romanian border in Békés County. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, historic landmarks and abundant green spaces, the town offers a peaceful environment enriched by gardens, parks, waterways and scenic walking paths.
The historic centre is dominated by the Romanian Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas. Built in the early 19th century in the late Baroque style, it houses a remarkable iconostasis with icons dating back to 1827. Nearby stands the Almásy Palace, formerly a residence of the aristocracy and now an interactive museum offering insights into court life. Originally erected as a medieval fortress, the palace has evolved over the centuries, with its former gate transformed into a Baroque tower between 1740 and 1745 and its façade later rebuilt in the so-called Zopf style, a late Baroque architectural movement that combines ornamental elements with influences of early Neoclassicism. Opposite the palace stands the iconic Gyula Castle, whose crenelated towers have watched over the town since the 15th century, withstanding numerous attacks, including the Ottoman siege of 1566. Built by the Maróthy family, this Gothic fortress is notable for its brick construction, an unusual choice compared with the stone typically used for medieval fortifications. Its distinctive red tones create a striking contrast with the green foliage of the plane trees and oaks in the centuries-old park that surrounds it.
Just a short walk away lies the Várfürdő spa complex, renowned for its therapeutic waters, which emerge from a depth of around 2 kilometres at a temperature of 72 °C. Their distinctive yellow-brown and reddish-brown hues are due to their rich mineral composition, with high levels of chloride, iodine and sodium, which make them particularly beneficial for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatism, inflammation of the peripheral nervous system and physical rehabilitation.
Opened in 1959, the spa complex has undergone several transformations over the decades. Starting with the conversion of an existing bath into its first pool, the site expanded during the 1960s and 1970s with the addition of new pools, including an Olympic-sized pool, to accommodate a growing number of visitors. In 1981, a water slide and a wooden slatted structure were introduced, providing shelter during the cooler months and enhancing the overall sense of relaxation. Following several modernisation projects carried out over the years, the indoor swimming pool was transformed into a fully fledged wellness centre in 2002, with the addition of a children’s water park. At the end of 2025, after a complete refurbishment, the historic Lovarda, the castle’s former riding hall built in 1833, reopened as an elegant space that now houses a large indoor thermal swimming pool.
Today, the Gyula complex covers an area of approximately 84,000 square metres and comprises 23 pools, including whirlpools and therapeutic pools, as well as a water park and a medical centre offering targeted treatments such as mud therapy and physiotherapy.
