Almaty is defined by its artistic richness, which spans the entire city, as well as by its status as Kazakhstan&#8217;s largest and most important historical, cultural, financial, and economic centre. Once the capital of the Asian republic until 1997, the city is rich in history and art, featuring landmarks like the wooden Ascension Cathedral and the Central State Museum, which houses numerous Kazakh masterpieces. At the same time, Almaty embraces modernity, showcased by the state-of-the-art Medeo sports facility – the largest high-altitude sports complex in the world – nestled in the mountains, and its well-designed shopping malls, complete with cinemas and playgrounds.
The modern face of the city of Almaty is immediately evident upon landing at its easily accessible international airport. Recently renovated, upgraded, and expanded, the airport now features a cutting-edge passenger terminal and the first in Central Asia to receive certification through EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) software. Efficiency was a key focus throughout the design and construction phases. The airport was built using high-quality insulation materials, water-saving equipment, and advanced methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, and waste. The aim was to comply with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN&#8217;s specialised agency responsible for regulating and developing civil aviation since 1947.
Guided by the principles of environmental efficiency and sustainability, the lighting system was also developed with these values in mind. For this reason, Disano, a leading company in lighting for infrastructure – particularly airports – was chosen to manage the project. Radon floodlights featuring LED sources were installed on the new terminal apron to significantly reduce energy costs.
