South Bohemia never fails to captivate visitors with its magical landscapes and charming towns, so enchanting they seem straight out of a fairy tale. Among them, its capital, České Budějovice, founded in the 13th century, certainly stands out. Its 750-year history is reflected in the buildings and monuments lining the narrow streets, and especially in the expansive Ottokar II of Bohemia Square, one of the largest squares in Europe. Right at the centre stands the Baroque-style Samson Fountain, depicting the biblical story of Samson fighting the lion. Both figures rest on a shell supported by four statues of Atlas. Among the 48 buildings surrounding the square, the town hall rises as a dignified structure with a Baroque façade punctuated by three towers. The central tower is the tallest, with four statues along the parapet representing Justice, Vigilance, Courage, and Wisdom, and the city coat of arms displayed above the central window.
Not far from the square is St. Nicholas Cathedral, originally Gothic but rebuilt in Baroque style after being destroyed by fire in the 17th century. The interior is very simple and cherishes a precious 18th-century high altar, embellished with a painting of St. Nicholas. Next to the cathedral stands the 72-metre-high Black Tower with six bells. Completed towards the end of the 16th century, it served both as a bell tower and a watchtower.
