Nestled in a charming inlet on Sicily’s northern coast, at the foot of Mount San Calogero, Termini Imerese boasts a rich history that spans prehistoric times. Its past unfolds through discoveries of artifacts, weapons, and tools dating back to the Palaeolithic, Copper, and Bronze Ages found within its territory.

Strolling through the streets and squares of Termini Imerese, called by the ancient Romans as civitas splendidissima (the most splendid city), is a journey through history and art. One of the first landmarks encountered is the Cathedral of San Nicola di Bari, with a Latin cross plan and works such as the 17th-century altar with its precious polychrome marble, and the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata, with its fascinating blue majolica dome. Equally valuable are the Via Roma staircase, studded with monuments such as the medieval tower and the Jesuit College, as well as the double-arched Cornelius Aqueduct, a great masterpiece reflecting the ancient Romans’ extraordinary engineering skills.

Since its origins, the story of this beautiful Sicilian town has been closely intertwined with the presence of thermal springs where, according to the legend, Hercules first immersed himself after the battle against the giant Erice. Founded in the vicinity of the ancient thermal complex, today’s Termini Imerese, known as the new Thermae Himerae, took shape when settlers departed from the Greek city of Himera. The original city, established in 648 B.C., was destroyed by the Carthaginians in 409 B.C., forcing the community to migrate.

This locality is full of highly valuable attractions and enjoys an exceptionally advantageous location, situated less than 25 miles from the Sicilian capital, Palermo. The recent completion of the San Leonardo bridge was specifically aimed at enhancing its accessibility. This civil engineering marvel has proven to be key in optimising traffic flow along Sicily’s entire Tyrrhenian coastline, serving as an excellent alternative to the motorway.

The lighting of this important bridge was developed by Disano, a global leader in the lighting of large areas and infrastructure. For this project, the best solution was provided by the Sicura RGBW luminaires. Their advanced LED sources ensure excellent colour rendering, a uniform and stable light emission and considerable savings in terms of energy and maintenance costs. Furthermore, this luminaire ensures great efficiency throughout its very long life.

Aesthetically, Sicura‘s very linear design and clean-cut profile lay the foundations for a harmonious dialogue with the surrounding urban context.

Moreover, the RGBW system, with wireless controls to manage the scenic effects, adds a personalised touch to the structure to be illuminated, focusing on striking colour changes with great scenic impact.

Disano demonstrated extraordinary expertise in the lighting system on the San Leonardo bridge, achieving perfect visibility, maintaining a consistent light flux, and ensuring energy savings. These valuable technical qualities are complemented by the capability to control lights, producing special effects that enhance the entire Sicilian infrastructure.
