HVC, which stands for Huisvuilcentrale (in English, Municipal Waste Treatment Plant), operates in the waste management and renewable energy sectors for forty-four local authorities and six water boards across North Holland, South Holland, Utrecht, Flevoland and Friesland. The company’s headquarters are in Alkmaar, a historic and picturesque town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland, within an hour’s drive from Amsterdam.
HVC was founded in 1991 with a focus on environmental sustainability, following an initiative by a group of Dutch municipalities. Their goal was to build a state-of-the-art plant in Alkmaar for flue gas treatment and energy recovery. While waiting for the plant to be completed, the company introduced separate waste collection for the first time in the 1990s. Residents of North Holland were required to separate organic and green waste from unsorted waste, placing it in the designated bins provided for this purpose. In 1996, the waste-to-energy plant was finally completed, marking an important milestone: non-recyclable waste could now be converted into electricity rather than being sent to landfill.
From the 2000s onwards, HVC expanded further into South Holland, Friesland and Flevoland and began processing sludge from water treatment plants to produce biomass. In the decades that followed, the company increasingly shifted its focus towards raw materials and sustainable energy through a series of initiatives, including substantial investments in the construction of solar farms on reclaimed landfill sites, the installation of wind turbines and the creation of district heating networks using waste heat to enable residential neighbourhoods and greenhouses to move away from fossil fuels. On top of that, HVC also promotes the use of geothermal heat through geothermal solutions.
Therefore, it is an organisation undergoing constant transformation, having evolved from a consortium of local authorities focused on waste disposal into a cornerstone of the Dutch energy transition.
It is within this context of continuous modernisation that the recent energy efficiency project at the Alkmaar plant was undertaken. The Dutch company Attiva Lichtprojecten, in collaboration with Disano, has relied on the Italian manufacturer’s LED technology to create an advanced, safe and customised lighting system for the plant’s various areas.
Specifically, watertight fixtures from the Hydro series were installed alongside Astro Q suspended lights. Both luminaires are characterised by high reliability, robustness and outstanding performance.
In particular, Astro Q incorporates the most advanced technologies in the field of industrial lighting. Drawing on Disano’s long-standing expertise, these systems have been designed to ensure a constant luminous flux (low flicker) with zero glare, resulting in optimal visibility and maximum safety for operators. Furthermore, Astro Q is fitted with a DALI power supply for smart and precise lighting control: this allows the light output to be adjusted according to actual needs, achieving further energy and maintenance savings.
In the offices, the choice fell upon the Creta ceiling lights. These stand out for their low glare rating (UGR<17) and consistent light output (low flicker), offering a high level of visual comfort.
Finally, the outdoor areas have been illuminated by Giovi luminaires, which provide high-quality, stable and safe light output, together with an excellent colour rendering index.
As each luminaire is equipped with the most innovative, high-performance LED light sources, the system enables a significant reduction in pollutant emissions, perfectly reflecting the sustainability philosophy that guides Disano in promoting high-efficiency solutions.
Through this coordinated project, the Italian lighting company has developed a state-of-the-art lighting system tailored to every area of the HVC facility, delivering efficient, safe lighting that supports the staff’s work and productivity.
