In the heart of Novara, in Italy’s Piedmont region, Golgi Park is now home to the city’s first urban Biodiversity Tech Oasis (Oasi Tech della Biodiversità in Italian). This approximately 5,000-square-metre green space has been regenerated thanks to financial support from the Comoli Ferrari Group, in collaboration with the nature-tech company 3Bee and the City of Novara.
The Biodiversity Tech Oasis is a benchmark for integrated sustainability. It is a protected and regenerated urban area where environmental conservation meets advanced digital technologies. Here, local wildlife, particularly pollinating insects, is protected and supported, while a network of devices continuously monitors the health of the ecosystem and the effectiveness of the regeneration in real time.
A notable example is the apiary, the beehive area. Surrounded by climbing plants, it is equipped with instruments that monitor key parameters such as hive temperature, weight and humidity, as well as environmental conditions. A dedicated device analyses the vibrations produced by insects in flight, helping to track their presence and diversity.
The Bug Hotel, meanwhile, offers shelter for wild pollinators such as solitary bees. This artificial habitat is also equipped with sensors to monitor air quality. The flowerbeds feature a selection of plants with staggered flowering periods, ensuring a continuous supply of pollen and nectar for insects throughout the year.
Finally, all the environmental and satellite data collected is fed into a digital platform for further analysis.
The Biodiversity Tech Oasis is therefore a shining example of how an urban green space can be transformed into an advanced biomonitoring centre, while also serving as an open-air laboratory where adults and children can discover biodiversity and understand the importance of protecting local natural habitats.
A project of this technological scale has been further elevated by Disano, a Milan-based leader in the lighting of public spaces, parks and streets. For this urban oasis, luminaires from the Ischia range were selected. Their minimalist, contemporary style embodies the very best of Made-in-Italy design, while their technology is engineered with a strong focus on sustainability and low environmental impact.
The technology integrated into Disano’s luminaires represents the pinnacle of innovation. The LED light sources, positioned at the top of each fixture, deliver precise and controlled light emission, eliminating spill and complying with the strictest regulations on light pollution. This approach helps protect nocturnal flora and fauna, reflecting the company’s commitment to ecological transition and the principles of the circular economy.
From an aesthetic perspective, Ischia stands out for its ultra-slim, clean circular silhouette, which blends discreetly and harmoniously into its surroundings. Its presence is subtle by day, while in the evening it transforms into an elegant piece of street furniture that enhances walkways and creates a welcoming sense of security.
Disano’s lighting installation at the Novara Biodiversity Tech Oasis completes the project, demonstrating how thoughtful lighting design can make a tangible contribution to protecting biodiversity. The Ischia streetlamps combine efficiency, optical precision and energy savings with a careful approach to preserving the delicate balance of the natural ecosystem.
