Belfast is a city bursting with energy, a troubling past recounted in more than two thousand murals, numerous art galleries and monuments, witnesses of its considerable cultural heritage, and, last but not least, a lively nightlife of its picturesque, historic pubs.

But Belfast is above all a port city, where the ill-fated Titanic was built in late 1908. In the early 20th century, in fact, this Northern Irish city was one of the world’s leading ship builders. Belfast City Hall, the town hall that hosted the first session of the Northern Ireland Parliament in 1921, also belongs to the flourishing industrial period. Finished in 1906, it is a beautiful building in classical Renaissance style completely surrounded by gardens dotted with several statues, including one in honour of Queen Victoria.

The city centre reflects the vibrancy of the Irish capital, with a great proliferation of pubs and nightclubs immersed in the music of local artists: among them, the Crown Liquor Bar Saloon, created by Patrick Flanagan and dating back to 1880, is a true jewel of Victorian architecture.

Another iconic place is the Custom House Square, overlooking River Liffey and so called because of the imposing presence of the iconic Customs House, now seat of the Ministry of the Environment. Given its importance, the square often hosts cultural and musical events and is a popular meeting place, which recently benefited from various restoration works to give it a more contemporary look.

Disano, together with its partner NMK Engineering Ltd., was asked to find a solution to replace the existing lighting system with new, modern and, above all, LED products.

The existing poles and mounting brackets were fitted with Astro in the square while Mini Stelvio and Mini Rodio were installed along the main streets leading to the centre.

Each luminaire is characterised by a very special design, with linear shapes and a refined Made in Italy style, blending beautifully with the evocative yet sparkling atmosphere of the Irish square.

Classy aesthetics combined with cutting-edge technology: Disano’s lights, selected and evaluated in the Italian company’s labs, allow for unequalled lighting performance, high colour rendering, excellent energy savings maintained over the system’s very long life span, and great flux stability to protect our eyes.

The renowned Custom House Square illuminated by Disano luminaires can now reap all the benefits of sublime lighting to bring safety and well-being to residents who have decided to relax, have a chat or attend a concert in a place which is so representative of Belfast’s vibrancy.
